Flood Insurance

Standard home insurance does not cover flooding, but you can safeguard your home and belongings with a separate flood insurance policy to protect against costly losses.

Flood insurance is a separate policy that can be purchased in addition to homeowners, renters, or condo insurance. As a form of catastrophe insurance, it covers flooding from rain, overflowing rivers, and other external water sources—risks that standard home insurance policies typically do not cover.

Due to the high cost of flood damage, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)—part of FEMA—underwrites most flood insurance policies in the U.S. It also partners with private insurers, including A.Neto Agency, through the Write Your Own (WYO) Program to provide coverage.

What Does Flood Insurance Cover?

Flood insurance helps protect against direct damage from flooding, defined as an excess of water on normally dry land. Coverage includes:

✔ Building Coverage – Pays for damage to your home’s physical structure and permanently installed fixtures.
✔ Contents Coverage – Helps replace furniture, electronics, clothing, and other personal belongings damaged by flooding.

What Doesn’t Flood Insurance Cover?

Flood insurance does not cover water damage that originates inside your home, such as:

✔ Burst pipes flooding your home
✔ Overflowing bathtubs damaging floors or ceilings
✔ Sewer backups (unless caused by heavy rain or flooding)

For internal water damage, homeowners insurance may provide coverage, and some policies offer optional water backup protection. Simple preventive measures, like improving drainage around your home, can also help reduce water intrusion risks.

What Else Isn’t Covered?

Flood insurance does not cover damage to:

❌ Septic systems
❌ Decks and patios
❌ Fences
❌ Hot tubs and swimming pools
❌ Business-related financial losses
❌ Vehicles (covered under auto insurance)
❌Personal property stored in basements (except connected appliances)

Additionally, flood insurance offers limited coverage for valuables like artwork and antiques.
